My daughter has been having violent coughing fits in the middle of the night for the last three nights. The strange thing is that it only happens at night. She doesn't have a cough during the daytime.

So obviously Vicki and I haven't been sleeping well. Last night, in that weird half-awake, half-asleep state I realized why she's been coughing like that: There's a bug in the code. The cough function -- Ellie.cough() -- which is supposed to expel irritants, has a bug that's causing unintended looping which results in the long coughing fits. I actually saw the code in my head and it seemed like an easy fix.

Early in the morning when I woke up a little more I realized how crazy this was. It can't be a bug in code. It has to be related, I thought, to domains and the fact that we don't have the right domains whitelisted.

When I tried to explain this to my wife (after we'd both just woke up) she stared at me for a moment and said, "What are you talking about?" I had to admit I really didn't know, but it seemed to make sense earlier.

Anyway, Ellie seemed much better this morning but my wife was going to call the doctor and see about getting her an appointment. I'm assuming that the doctor won't come to the same conclusion that I did.

You've never had that happen, where in the middle of the night you make some big realization that turns out to make absolutely NO sense?

Oh man. I had something simliar happen around when I first learned HTML. I don't remember if it was a dream, daydream, random thought/convo/whatever, but basically we (I don't remember who "we" is now, but a group of people) were looking for something that couldn't be found. I think we were out in the park or woods, and I realized that what we were looking for wasn't there because we got the img src tag wrong and that's why whatever it was wasn't displaying.

Sometimes when I'm looking for something in my house I want to press an imaginary Command-F to search for it :)

I'd love to hear the doctor say "Oh, you just forgot to make the changes to the source live."
